Whatever happened to the Drum Solo?
Remember those interminable drum solos that sat in the middle of those seminal 70’s albums? Was it ‘Toad’ that featured that famous Ginger Baker drum solo?
Wasn’t it obligatory too for every concert to feature the drummer being let loose on his kit, is it my imagination or doesn’t it happen so much these days?
There are notable exceptions of course (Tommy Lee Jones of Motley Crue’s self-indulgent bullshit sessions are a case in point: yeh the FX are great but you can’t drum for shit you prat!) but you don’t see/hear the real thing so much anymore in my view.
But if you’re a fan of a good percussionist, past or present here’s your chance to let us know - just type in the Comment fields below. Just type in: Drummer’s Name - followed by the group and good example of a song.
Here’s our list of some of the top drummers of all time ( in no particular order).
- Mitch Mitchell ( Jimi Hendrix Experience) ‘Voodoo Chile.
- Ron Bushy ( Iron Butterfly) ‘In A Gadda Da Vida’
- John Bonham ( Led Zeppelin) ‘Moby Dick’
- Buddy Rich ‘ Mercy, Mercy’
- Keith Moon ( The Who) ‘My Generation’
- Joe Morello ( Dave Brubeck Quartet) ‘Take Five’
- Neil Peart ( Rush) ‘The Rhythm Method
- Phil Collins ‘ In The Air Tonight’
- Gene Krupa ‘Let There Be Drums’
- Ian Paice ( Deep Purple) ‘ Black Night’

I like YYZ solo from Rush. But it is true I think the drum solo got lost somewhere between the seventies and the eighties. Although some do sneak through,,,especially at live gigs.
